As the Trimester is coming to a close PALOMA gears up to start the data collection portion of the Boyle Heights Food Study. PALOMA students have developed four community survey’s a Resident Survey, Youth Survey, Retail Food Survey and a Farmers Market Survey. The process took many brainstorming sessions and many drafts. The use of technology allowed the process to move much quicker with instant updates.

PALOMA on Occidental Campus

On Friday April 22, 2013 the PALOMA students presented an update on the Boyle Heights Food Study on the Occidental Campus. Students where able to go on a campus tour, visiting the campus garden, residents halls, classrooms and quad. We end the tour at the Market Place the dinning facilities at Occidental. Food at the Market Place is 19% sourced locally. PALOMA shared a meal after heading out to continue our research project. Look out for the presentations this coming week.

I’m a student in the the PALOMA program at LA CAUSA Youthbuild Charter School. I joined the PALOMA because I wanted to learn more about the food we eat. At first I thought it was a nutrition program that was going to educate us about
our food and health. Once I joined I found myself learning about food accessibility in Boyle Heights. We’ve learned about the
problems the community faces, such as health issues and difficulty accessing healthy food. We have learned that Boyle Heights is a food desert which is a big problem in the United States. A food desert is a community where you have a difficult time buying healthy food such as fresh produce and have too much junk food such as fastfood, chips and soda. PALOMA’s main goal is to develop methods to fix this problem. We are going to be conducting focus groups and surveying the community which we have spent time training for and studying for in the program. Also we’ll be going into the community to provide services and take action against Food Deserts.

I’m most excited and looking forward to our gardening day. One of the reasons I enjoy this program is because I have not grown anything since I was a child ( I used to have a tomato
plant when I was little). My overall goal is to learn how to be more aware of my surroundings and to get more involve with my community. Community service is something I hope to get more into and PALOMA is helping me achieve his goal.
